"Succesfully Introduced" Snails

Today we had a heavy bout of rain, and I got off of work shortly after. I had to take out the trash before leaving, usually something I have to do in the rain or long after in the dark - stepping out to the sidewalk, I was greeted by the sight of hundreds of unusual snails retreating in to the landscaping from the emerging sun. Since I didn’t recognize these snails, I know we don’t use any pesticides, and since I have a very picky snail specialist at home, I decided to fill up a large cup with a bunch of them and research them when I got home.

They are all non-native Decollate Snails, a primarily other-snail-hunting carnivore added to control “pest” species of snails in gardens. It is considered a success at that! However I found them mulling over many empty shells of non-natives, and I have to admit, calling these a “biological control” instead of an invasive species just because it was “succesful” at what it was intentionally introduced for (protecting dummy mankind’s precious gardens) grates on a very special nerve for me. After these snailwolves have eaten every other snail, their momma, and their babies (mmmm eggs) these guys will munch on decaying organic materials like plain ol’ run of the mill snailcows. They are advertised primarily as eating the unwanted snails in your garden and moving on, but they are not so picky as vendors would have you believe. They will gladly trash populations of native snails, beneficial or non, within their reach. Or so says the many empty shells of natives I brushed through today while plucking up Decollates munching away on grass clippings.

I’m glad that most people seem to be on to this bullshit, because only 4 states allow the purchase and intentional release of Decollate Snails. My state is unfortunately one of those. Way to go Texas, you are such a winner with your conservation efforts (COUGHdunessagebrushlizardCOUGH.)

These are, however, perhaps a blessing in disguise for some. Don’t get me wrong, I find it disgusting that these are encouraged to be established as an invasive population to protect pretty flowers! However they are sold on the cheap to a market that isn’t catering to me. Living snails for as little as 25 cents in small lots, and savings increase from there. Since my hungry Caiman Lizard refuses to eat anything but snails these days (and oh does he adore these) but until my own water snail breeding is producing enough food for him, I am pressed to find affordable live snails to feed him (mystery snails, what I am breeding, being about a dollar a piece at cheapest!) So if you have a snail specialist, and you don’t have as many qualms about supporting a business specializing in further establishing an invasive species, maybe look in to Decollate Snails.

Me, I’m just going to water the garden at work to flush my quarry and be pleased that I’m taking away snails that don’t belong instead of potentially threatened natives when I load up a couple 32 oz. cups with snailmeat babies.

Some cool shit about these introduced carnivorous butts: They actually purposefully grind their own shells down from a point to increase their mobility and decrease their weight, and it’s thought to also somehow aid in dessication prevention. These snails upgrade themselves.

That’s how it used to be. I think they’re more commenting on how Matt Smith’s companions have all been “extraordinaries” who didn’t make sense to him at first so far. Amy having her life jacked up by cracks in time, Rory being erased from time and then coming back, and the newest girl whose name slips my mind this instant having died in front of the Doctor twice before already at different points in time. Different people yet the same even in name.
