Though it hasn’t really been confirmed as the case simply suggested and joked about, if it is then Abed Nadir is both a severe exaggeration and lampoon, and somehow still the most accurate case of a character with Asperger’s I have ever seen in television, movies, or really anything. At first I wasn’t entirely sure about how to feel about it. But the series and character grew on me strongly.

As someone who has it I’d like to think I can speak for at least a lot of us in being thankful for Abed’s presence in multimedia. It’s such a fucking welcome sight after all the misrepresentations in things like crime dramas that miss the nail completely on what Asperger’s is and turn it into autistic sociopathy. Or all the little pissants running around the web self diagnosing it and/or trying to use it as an excuse for their idiocy or jerkass behavior.

Despite the general apathy about this episode though, I’ve got to say this one quote from him honestly hit a hard note at home. Not demonizing the episode by any means, more… Mixed feelings. Because the quote is both relatable and not entirely accurate at the same time, or more… It’s weird and hard to describe. But it’s something I’m pretty sure anyone with Asperger’s can relate to while at the same time I think it’s something most of the audience at home doesn’t actually understand when they hear or read it.

Either way, I actually remember pausing and walking away for a while after he said it. So… Good work writers, I guess. Somehow writing your comedy, even if it wasn’t quite intentional you’ve outperformed just about every serious show that audiences at home ignorantly take their information from like CSI.

EDIT: Just for the record, I don’t actually care that it is represented at all. I don’t think it’s any sort of important issue. I don’t really see the big deal about its existence. I’m just really thankful that, since it wound up getting represented so poorly already, something is finally actually doing it remotely accurately.
